WNBA-National
News
One of the benefits of being a WNBA-SF member is that you
are connected to seven chapters nationwide.
Here a few benefits the National organization has for
you:
1: Permanent Collection of WNBA member books. In 2007 the
Boston Public Library set aside a section for a permanent
collection of all WNBA authored books. Please contact
Katherine Dibble to have your book included in the
collection: kdibble@att.net
2: Have your book listed on our National Web
site/WNBA Author's page. National web site member password
is included in your membership kit.
3: Get published in WNBA's National Newsletter, The
Bookwoman. Send us a short article on a favorite book you
read while traveling for our "Have Book Will Travel"
section. Contact Joan Gelfand for more information
about The Bookwoman: joangelfand@pacbell.net
4: Nominations for our bi-annual WNBA award are due
in May. Please nominate your favorite 'bookwoman' for
the award. See www.wnba-books.org for more
information on the WNBA Award.
Lastly, tell us about your successes with WNBA for our

History
The Woman's National Book Association is a national
organization of women and men who work with and value
books. WNBA exists to promote reading and to support
the role of women in the community of the book. The San
Francisco Chapter of WNBA was founded in 1968 by Effie
Lee Morris, then coordinator of Children's Services for
the San Francisco Main Public Library.
Membership has ranged from sixty to one hundred. Our
members are writers, booksellers, agents, editors,
publishers, publicists, librarians, graphic designers,
career coaches, marketing specialists, conference
planners, aspiring authors and avid readers.
The San Francisco branch of WNBA is one chapter in a
vibrant organization with over 800 members across the
county. Each branch has its own flavor and lively
events to honor books, the creation of books, the world
of books, and allied arts.
The Women's National Book Association has been a
Non-Governmental Organization member of the United
Nations since 1959. An NGO is defined as "any
non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is
organized on a local, national or international level.
Task-oriented and driven by people with a common
interest, NGOs perform a variety of services and
humanitarian functions, bring citizens' concerns to
governments, monitor policies and encourage political
participation at the community level."
In effect, WNBA members are to be ambassadors for the
UN. Our organization disseminates information about the
United Nations through all the means at our disposal,
especially through our national and chapter
publications and monthly programs.

From Our Chapter President

Dear WNBA-SF
Friends,
We have so much exciting news and so much to be grateful for I feel
we’re getting a jump start on Thanksgiving. WNBA-SF members have
opportunities to participate in a variety of literary events this
month whether it’s up in Marin celebrating WNBA’s National Reading
Group Month at Book Passage, to WNBA-SF authors reading in San
Francisco at Litquake, or down in San Jose for Book Group Expo. I
look forward to seeing you at any one - or all-of these events!
I am pleased to share the news about all of the wonderful WNBA-SF
authors who will be taking part in Litquake’s LitCrawl on Oct. 11. At 6 p.m.
Joan Gelfand (WNBA National President and WNBA-SF past-president)
will read with authors Jean Shinoda-Bolen, Marc Lesser and Sera
Beak at the Spirituality reading at Forest Books (3080 16th Street,
San Francisco). At 7:15 p.m. Diana
Chambers, Connie
Post, Lucille Lang Day, Becky Foust, and Alice Wilson Fried
(WNBA authors) will be featured during the Litquake’s final
event, at Parea Wine Bar, 795 Valencia Street, San
Francisco.
Since its inception in 1999 Litquake’s mission has been to
galvanize the Bay Area’s already thriving literary scene by
bringing emerging, mid-career and established local authors
together with fans of the written word for nine days of readings,
panel discussions, themed events, and general literary mayhem.
Litquake 2008 dates are Oct.
3-1.
WNBA-SF will celebrate National Reading Group Month by hosting a
reception on Oct 16 at 6:30 p.m. preceding Phillipa Gregory’s
presentation at Book Passage in
Marin (www.bookpassage.com). Ms. Gregory will talk about The Other
Queen in which she presents a unique view of Mary, Queen of Scots
during her captive years in Elizabethan England. Gregory uses new
research and her passion for historical accuracy in a tale filled
with suspense, passion, and political intrigue. Gregory is also the
author of The Other Boleyn Girl which has been made into a popular
movie. Join us and you may win a copy of the movie!
In October 2007 WNBA launched National Reading Group Month to
encourage and celebrate the joys of shared reading. October is
National Reading Group Month. 2008 partners include: HarperCollins
Publishers; Hyperion Books; The Random House Publishing Group;
Sasquatch Books; Simon & Schuster; and, Susannah Greenberg
Public Relations. National Reading Group Month is endorsed by: The
Association of American Publishers; Book Group Expo; The Book
Report Network; The New Jersey Library Association/State Libraries
of New Jersey; New York Center for Independent Publishing; and,
Reading Group Choices.
By the way, if you haven’t renewed your membership-do it today!
Your letter outlining membership benefits of national networking
opportunities, access to New York’s professional panel discussions,
a calendar of upcoming events and important members only
information will be mailed to you upon receipt of your membership
fee. An example of members only information would be, if you were a
writer looking for an editor, you could search the on-line data
base for contact and chapter information.
I am also very grateful for my health and being able to celebrate
another Breast Cancer Awareness month. I urge every woman reading
this to get a mammogram. Early detection saved my life!
Be
well,
Mary
